‘Rape, Raj and the Regiment’
This book is based on three points of fact. First the order by the quartermaster general to ‘acquire’ clean young girls for the army brothels to stem the epidemic of Venereal disease that was ravaging the ranks in colonial military bases.
Second the ‘defloration’ shows popular among wealthy clients in red light districts during the latter half of the 19th century and third the disappearance of two young English girls in northern India.
All these are documented facts. I simply built a story around them. I am not a historian or an academic but I use this story to point out the abuses suffered by all women past and present at the hands of the powerful particularly in times of conflict.
Soldier’s language and attitudes run through the narrative and their humour, although objectionable to some, illustrates the way they try to desensitise themselves from the barbarity of their trade. Ofter put through it against their will.
